Coteaux Meunier Rouge "Le Rû Bailly" 2021
The Coteaux Champenois Rouge Le Rû Bailly by Nowack is a still red born from a single parcel of Meunier set on the slopes of Vandières, in a Vallée de la Marne where fine sands rest on a clay-limestone matrix and the underlying chalk bedrock brings freshness and drive. Farmed with a craftsman's philosophy and a biodynamic approach that follows the lunar cycles, free of synthetic herbicides and respectful of the spontaneous flora, it is a wine that frankly tells the red, chalky vocation of this terroir.
This edition, from the 2021 harvest, comes from Meunier grapes alone, harvested and selected with rigour, with a partial destemming that tempers any vegetal astringency before skin maceration begins in open vats. Vinification and maturation proceed with spontaneous fermentations started by indigenous yeasts and carry on in used oak barrels, so as to preserve the acid tension that gives backbone and longevity to this red.
On tasting, Rouge Le Rû Bailly 2021 shows a bright ruby red shot through with coppery reflections and opens on a picture of crunchy red fruits, with freshly picked redcurrant to the fore and subtle strokes of violet interwoven with sweet spices that aeration gradually sharpens. On the palate the attack is airy and fine, sustained by a chiselled acidity that stretches the red fruit with a salivating, mineral tension towards a chalky, persistent finish of great balance and marked drinkability.
