Vilain Petit Coteaux 2022

The Coteaux Champenois Vilain Petit ~~Canard~~ Coteaux by Lointier plays with the image of the ugly duckling in its very name, paying tribute to Meunier, the grape long considered Champagne’s younger sibling and now rediscovered for its authenticity and its ability to express the terroir. From the hillsides of the western Vallée de la Marne comes a still red wine of honest and irreverent character, the result of organic viticulture and parcel-by-parcel work focused on the purity of the fruit, in perfect harmony with the playful “Meunier for ever” motto on its label.

This edition, from the 2022 harvest, is made exclusively from Meunier grapes from the Les Sautours lieu-dit in Connigis, where brown limestone soils and rich clays give the wine depth, structure and a marked energy. Vinification and maturation take place in barrels, where the wine rests for two years before bottling in August 2024, developing a broader texture and a complexity that enhances its character without ever masking the honesty of the fruit.

On tasting, Vilain Petit ~~Canard~~ Coteaux 2022 shows a bright, translucent ruby red colour. The nose is fragrant and layered, with notes of small red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by delicate spicy hints and a well-integrated touch of oak. On the palate it is fresh and juicy, with fine, polished tannins and a lively acidity that supports the fruit, leading to a long, savoury and remarkably clean finish. Production in a limited run of 447 bottles.

Champagne Lointier risiede a Crézancy, un villaggio situato nella parte occidentale della Vallée de la Marne, poco noto ma immerso in un territorio ricco di storia e tradizione vinicola. Le sue vigne si trovano nei villaggi di Brasles e Gland, dove i suoli argillo-calcarei e i dolci pendii esposti a sud offrono condizioni ideali per la coltivazione di un Meunier di grande espressione.

Con una produzione di circa 4.000 bottiglie annue, Lointier è un vero “garagista” della Champagne: la sua cantina, situata sotto la sua abitazione, riflette un approccio intimo e artigianale. Jean-Baptiste Insieme alla moglie Hélène, segue pratiche biologiche e sostenibili, escludendo completamente trattamenti chimici. La loro passione per la natura e l’apicoltura si traduce in un omaggio alle api, sia nelle etichette delle cuvée che nella produzione di miele millefiori.

La vinificazione avviene in legni di varie origini, anfore e tini, con fermentazioni spontanee e minimi interventi. Senza filtrazioni né chiarifiche, gli Champagne di Lointier esprimono purezza, energia e autenticità, con una frutta croccante e una sorprendente tensione salina. Alcune cuvée includono una parte di “tailles” (seconda pressatura) per aggiungere struttura e vinosità. Ogni bottiglia è un’espressione diretta della terra, senza compromessi, per Champagne dal carattere essenziale e vibrante.
