Cumières Rouge "Moulin à Vent" 2018

The Côteaux Champenois Rouge Moulin à Vent by Geoffroy is a red wine from Meunier grapes drawn from the eponymous lieu-dit of Cumières, a Premier Cru village of the Vallée de la Marne where this variety reveals a rare expressive depth. The old vines, planted between 1953 and 1964 on the clay-silt terroir with a southern exposure, yield a red rarely vinified on its own, able to translate the chalky identity and the ancient calling of this land into a winemaking story that revives the history of Champagne's still wines.

This edition, from the 2018 harvest, undergoes vinification and maturation for eighteen months in 600-litre demi-muids, which gently shape the substance while preserving its freshness. The wine is subjected to neither fining nor filtration, keeping the imprint of its terroir fully intact. Production in a limited run of 1871 bottles.

On tasting, the Moulin à Vent 2018 stands out for its profile of rare finesse, where the slender, luminous structure of the Meunier unfolds with elegance. The body is nimble yet deep, run through by a silky tannic weave and a vibrant freshness that sustains its entire development. The persistence lengthens with composure, intertwining the fruity flesh with a spiced nuance and a mineral breath that closes the palate in a taut, harmonious and finely chiselled finish.

The story of Champagne Geoffroy begins in the Premier Cru village of Cumières, among the most authentic terroirs of the Grande Vallée de la Marne, where the family has tended the vines since the early seventeenth century. Vignerons from one generation to the next, in the early 1950s Roger Geoffroy chose to vinify and bottle his own Champagne, giving rise to the brand. His son René expanded the Domaine with new plots, before Jean-Baptiste, a graduate in viticulture and oenology, took over at the end of the 1980s.

Since 2007, the new estate in Aÿ has allowed an entirely gravity-fed vinification, capable of preserving the integrity of the grapes and bringing out the character of each plot, vinified separately with meticulous attention. This care stems from a clear conviction, for in Jean-Baptiste's eyes the terroir is the true protagonist, and more than the grape variety it is Cumières that lends identity to his Champagnes and Coteaux Champenois. A vision that today looks to the future, as in 2024 the torch passes to the new generation, with Sacha Geoffroy working alongside her father in running the estate, ensuring a continuity built on excellence and innovation.

Across the family's fifteen hectares, all Premier Cru, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier and two forgotten varieties, Petit Meslier and Arbane, ripen side by side, sharing the same exposure and care and heightening the unique imprint of the terroir. This vision makes Geoffroy a benchmark among Vignerons, for its commitment to soil regeneration and the protection of biodiversity.
