Champagne Rousseaux-Batteux
Les Potences 2020
The Champagne Les Potences by Rousseaux-Batteux reveals the deepest and most austere side of the Grand Cru of Verzenay, on the northern coteaux of the Montagne de Reims. This rare and authentic Blanc de Noirs comes from the Pinot Noir vines of the lieu-dit Les Potences, planted in 1975 on a parcel of just 0.18 hectares. They are farmed with a respectful, artisanal approach, with cover cropping and soil work by draught horse, to preserve the vineyard’s natural balance and bring out the truest expression of the terroir.
This edition, Vintage 2020, is vinified and fermented in fût de chêne, where the wine also matures. It is then bottled without filtration or cold stabilisation to keep its natural integrity intact, which can leave a light deposit that does not affect its quality. After tirage, it ages on the lees for 36 months before dégorgement. A final dosage of less than 3 g/l, in Extra Brut style, heightens its purity and tension.
On tasting, Les Potences 2020 opens with a broad, refined bouquet of ripe red fruit and small wild berries, woven with spicy hints and delicate touches of bark and blond tobacco. On the palate it is elegant and deep, supported by a subtle mineral texture and vibrant freshness in a harmonious balance, leading to a long, precise finish with great aromatic persistence. Production in a limited, numbered run of 942 bottles.
