Champagne Paul Bara
Annonciade 2012
The Champagne Annonciade by Paul Bara owes its name to the woman who in 1833 married Auguste François Bara, a cooper from Bouzy, and from that bond between the family and wood comes the idea of a barrel-fermented cuvée, the most ambitious and recognisable of the Domaine. Bouzy, a Grand Cru village from the Montagne de Reims, offers clay and limestone to vines of great age, where Pinot Noir reaches a deep ripeness able to sustain a long dialogue with wood without effort.
This edition, Vintage 2012, brings together Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes in equal parts, chosen among the finest lots of the village and selected barrel by barrel after repeated tastings in the cellar. Vinification and fermentation take place in oak casks for about six months, a passage that brings volume and lightly spiced shades, while after tirage comes an ageing on the lees of more than ten years before dégorgement, in an Extra Brut style of great composure.
On tasting, Annonciade 2012 wins through its depth and finesse, with notes of ripe fruit, hazelnut, light honey and delicate spices wrapped in a subtle chalky minerality. On the palate it is ample and silky, crossed by a vibrant freshness that carries an elegant and persistent finish, in a Champagne of intense and timeless character.
