Comtesse Marie de France 2015
The Champagne Comtesse Marie de France by Paul Bara stands at the top of the range, built on a strict parcel selection among the finest Grand Cru plots of Bouzy, a village from the Montagne de Reims that Pinot Noir has always regarded as its historic home. The cuvée takes up that legacy and carries it to its highest level, aiming at elegance and expressive power without ever giving in to excess, as happens only in truly great and complete years.
This edition, Vintage 2015, is a Blanc de Noirs made from the village Pinot Noir grapes alone, in a warm and generous year that brought in fruit of full ripeness. Vinification and maturation take place entirely in stainless steel to protect aromatic integrity and varietal freshness, while after tirage comes an ageing on the lees of at least eight years, and the final dosage, below 5 g/l, in an Extra Brut style, lets the year speak for itself.
On tasting, Comtesse Marie de France 2015 shows a broad and precise profile, opened by a fine, tight and evenly spread perlage, with hints of yellow-fleshed fruit, bread crust and toasted hazelnut that follow one another with order and great naturalness. On the palate it strikes for the balance between structure and finesse, with a compact and continuous progression, free of any faltering, that stretches towards a close of great mineral tension and truly remarkable persistence.
