Champagne Paul Bara
Annonciade 2009
The Champagne Annonciade by Paul Bara owes its name to the woman who in 1833 married Auguste François Bara, a cooper from Bouzy, and from that bond between the family and wood comes the idea of a barrel-fermented cuvée, the most ambitious and recognisable of the Domaine. Bouzy, a Grand Cru village from the Montagne de Reims, offers clay and limestone to vines of great age, where Pinot Noir reaches a deep ripeness able to sustain a long dialogue with wood without effort.
This edition, Vintage 2009, brings together 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay grapes, chosen among the finest lots of the village and selected barrel by barrel after repeated tastings in the cellar. Vinification and fermentation take place in oak casks for about six months, a passage that brings volume and lightly spiced shades, while after tirage comes an ageing on the lees of more than ten years before dégorgement, in an Extra Brut style of great composure.
On tasting, Annonciade 2009 shows a full and luminous golden hue crossed by fine and orderly bubbles, while the nose moves between ripe fruit, buttered apple and a barely perceptible vanilla, the mark of wood used with measure and never intrusive. On the palate it reveals intensity and substance together, with a broad and enveloping texture carried by steady tension and by a slightly almond-like close that lengthens the finish with remarkable elegance and precision.
