Champagne Egly-Ouriet
Millésime 2016
The Champagne Millésime by Egly-Ouriet is born in the Grand Cru of Ambonnay, regarded as the absolute summit for Pinot Noir in Champagne, where the deeply chalky soils and the old vines, with an average age of around forty years, give the wines a natural concentration and a rare intensity. This cuvée tells the most uncompromising story of grower Champagne, made of very low yields, respect for the terroir and an almost monastic patience, where every gesture is devoted to safeguarding the identity of each single cru.
This edition, Vintage 2016, shows a prevalence of Pinot Noir completed by 30% Chardonnay, grapes selected exclusively from old vines. Vinification and fermentation take place entirely in wood, naturally and with indigenous yeasts alone, followed by a maturation of around one year during which the wine clarifies slowly as it was done fifty years ago, without filtration or fining. After the tirage come 96 months of ageing on the lees before the dégorgement, and the final dosage of 1 g/l, in an Extra Brut style, lets the chalk and the fruit speak.
On the palate, it reveals a rich and vibrant substance, where the natural power of Pinot Noir meets a mineral tension that traces its contours with absolute precision. The structure is broad and deep, supported by a vivid acidity that lends momentum and verticality, while the very long rest on the lees adds a complexity worthy of the greatest wines of Burgundy. The finish, persistent and refined, prolongs the sensation of vinosity and balance, closing on a saline note of extraordinary length.
