Spécial Club "Chouilly" 2016
The Champagne Special Club Chouilly by Pierre Gimonnet & Fils is conceived as a focused, terroir-driven interpretation of the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, one of the most recognisable slopes of the Côte des Blancs for balance, luminosity and expressive finesse. From 2012 onward, Didier and Olivier Gimonnet chose to complement the historic Special Club cuvée with a series of editions dedicated to individual terroirs, with the aim of offering a more precise reading of origin and highlighting identity, soil and vintage without stylistic overlays.
This edition, Millésime 2016, is a Blanc de Blancs made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes sourced from the Lieu-dit Montaigu, a parcel located within the Chouilly terroir and selected for its ability to combine maturity and tension. Vinification takes place entirely in stainless steel, a choice intended to preserve freshness and aromatic precision, followed by a long ageing on the lees of 84 months, which contributes depth and coherence. The final dosage of just 4 g/l, in Extra Brut style, supports the wine’s profile without diminishing its mineral imprint.
In tasting, Special Club Chouilly 2016 expresses notes of ripe citrus, yellow apple and white flowers, complemented by chalky nuances and delicate hints of fine pastry. On the palate, the progression is taut and linear, supported by a streamlined structure and well-calibrated acidity that guides the development with natural balance. The finish is long, with a saline and dry close that precisely conveys the character of the Grand Cru of Chouilly and the elegant expression of Chardonnay in the 2016 vintage.
