Les Grandes Crayères 2021
The Champagne Les Grandes Crayères by Laherte Frères is a single-parcel Blanc de Blancs born in the village of Chavot, in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, a territory where the family has operated since 1889 and where today the sixth and seventh generations work side by side. The cuvée comes to life from a singular and complex terroir, where old vines planted in 1935 and 1978 sink into light soils that let the chalky craie emerge, bestowing on the wine an assertive minerality and a crystalline tension. It is precisely to give voice to this identity that, starting in 2014, Laherte Frères chose to isolate these Chardonnay grapes, creating a single-parcel Champagne capable of rendering with finesse and relief the most intimate truth of this chalky terroir, in a pure and sincere expression of its personality.
This edition, Vintage 2021, is obtained exclusively from Chardonnay grapes and its vinification involves a maturation in used barriques of three to ten years of age. After tirage comes an ageing of 36 months on its own lees, which accompanies the development of the cuvée's texture and complexity, completed by a "dégorgement à la volée". The final dosage in Extra Brut style, kept around 2.5 g/l, allows a precise reading of the fruit to emerge and rounds off the profile with balance and measure.
On tasting, Les Grandes Crayères 2021 reveals itself taut, deep and finely chiselled, with the Chardonnay of Chavot offering purity, energy and a remarkable mineral depth. On the nose it appears precise and bright, with hints of white grapefruit, citrus, white flowers, notes of shortbread and hazelnut that intertwine with a persistent chalky imprint. On the palate the texture is crystalline and vibrant, supported by a fine bubble and a saline finish that prolongs the tasting experience, reflecting with elegance the depth of the terroir from which it is born. Produced in a limited run of 4,272 bottles.
