The Champagne Petit Meslier by Laherte Frères is a Blanc de Blancs made from 100% of this rare grape variety, one of the few “Cépages Oubliés” still authorized in Champagne. Historically little cultivated and with a truly distinctive character, this variety was chosen by the Maison to preserve diversity and to offer a unique perspective on the terroir. Around Chavot, in the Côteaux Sud d’Épernay, the Laherte family decided to replant it, creating an authentic and identity-driven expression.

Based on the 2019 harvest, with about 40% of reserve wines ensuring depth and stylistic consistency, the wine is vinified in fût de chêne, following the Maison’s tradition, and then aged on its lees for at least 36 months. The low dosage, in Extra Brut style (2 g/l), enhances purity and tension, shaping a vibrant and incisive profile, ideal for those seeking rare and intense emotions.

On the palate, Petit Meslier shows a bright pale yellow hue, animated by a fine and persistent perlage. The nose opens with notes of aromatic herbs, fresh citrus, white flowers, and subtle spicy hints. The palate is taut, vertical, and surprisingly saline, with a decisive and original personality that reflects the expressive power of this forgotten grape variety.

Laherte Frères

Founded in 1889 by Jean-Baptiste Laherte in Chavot-Courcourt, in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, Maison Laherte Frères today stands as one of the most dynamic realities in Champagne. Since 2005, the estate has been led by Aurélien Laherte, who carries on the family heritage with a natural approach and a strong focus on the identity of the terroir, while preserving tradition and authenticity.

The Laherte family vineyards are located mainly in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, a subregion that shares characteristics with both the Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne, thanks to its diverse and complex soils. In total, the estate covers 10.5 hectares divided into more than 75 parcels: around seven hectares are farmed under certified biodynamics, with the remainder cultivated following organic or sustainable practices. Due to the fragmentation of the family holdings, Aurélien has registered as a négociant manipulant, allowing him to integrate all of the family’s grapes into his blends.

In the vineyard, the work follows an approach respectful of natural balance, using plant infusions, cover crops, and minimal tillage to preserve the microbial life of the soil. In addition to Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Chardonnay, Aurélien also vinifies several cépages oubliés, such as Petit Meslier, Arbanne, Pinot Blanc, and Fromenteau, enriching both the biodiversity and the expressive range of the estate’s vineyards. In the cellar, his philosophy favors gentle vinifications and minimal intervention, resulting in Champagnes that are vibrant, energetic, and full of personality.
