Clos du Mesnil 1985
In 1971 Rémi and Henri Krug seized the opportunity to purchase six hectares of vines, divided into small plots scattered around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and it was during a visit to the newly acquired land that they discovered a small walled vineyard called Clos du Mesnil, which still today represents the purest essence of the Krug philosophy. It is the expression of a single Chardonnay born from this one plot of 1.84 hectares, cultivated as a vineyard since the seventeenth century in the heart of one of the most iconic Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs.
This rare edition, Clos du Mesnil 1985, is unveiled once again by the Maison in 2025 to celebrate its fortieth anniversary and tells the story of an extraordinary year, with a memorable conclusion, in which a reduced harvest gave rise to concentrated, fresh and vital wines. Vinification and maturation take place in barrique and, after tirage, a long ageing on the lees follows for around twelve years, succeeded, after dégorgement, by a further rest in the Maison's cellars until 2025, prior to its new release.
On the palate, Clos du Mesnil 1985 reveals a luminous golden colour streaked with orange reflections and a dynamic, elegant profile, where the complexity acquired over time converses with a surprising freshness. It unfolds with great precision, supported by a full and balanced structure that runs through toasted notes, fruity nuances and a delicate bitter touch, leading to a long, intense and perfectly accomplished finish.
