Champagne Extra Brut
Les Couarres 2022

The Champagne Les Couarres by Chartogne-Taillet takes shape in Merfy, a village of the Massif de Saint-Thierry where a historic and varied lieu-dit occupies the dampest part of the village, with almost four hectares facing south and south-east on dark, deep soils of clay and chalky sand able to hold moisture even through the driest seasons. The vines, planted between 1970 and 2009, call for care and precision to keep naturally generous yields in check and give full voice to the site.

This edition, Vintage 2022, brings together Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes largely from the oldest plants of the parcel, with vinification and maturation carried out over nine months in fût de chêne, following a craft-minded philosophy attentive to the natural pace of the wine. After tirage comes at least thirty-six months of ageing on the lees, while the final dosage of 1.25 g/l, in Extra Brut style, preserves the purity of the fruit and the expressiveness of the terroir.

On tasting, Les Couarres 2022 appears clear and bright, crossed by golden reflections that anticipate a profile of great precision and still in evolution. On the palate it shows an almost tactile structure, with a soft and spherical attack and a dense, enveloping material that unfolds into a composed freshness of medium acidity, while the differences between the micro-zones emerge between the stony sensations of the tuffeau and the fresher tension of the clays, in a long and nuanced finish.
