Champagne Pierre Paillard
Les Mottelettes 2018
The Champagne Les Mottelettes by Pierre Paillard is a Blanc de Blancs born from the homonymous lieu-dit, a historic parcel located in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, on the South-facing slope of the Montagne de Reims. Here the Paillard brothers work old Chardonnay vines planted in 1961 from massal selection, delivering an unprecedented voice for the region, where the deep limestone transforms the solar generosity of the cru into a broad and chalky minerality, capable of telling a Chardonnay completely different from that of the CĂ´te des Blancs.
This edition, Vintage 2018, involves vinification and fermentation entirely in 350-litre barrique, with liège tirage for the prise de mousse, malolactic fermentation carried out and particular attention to the purity of the fruit. After tirage follows an ageing on the lees of about four years, before dégorgement. The final dosage of 3 g/l, in Extra Brut style, accompanies with measure a wine that is already naturally harmonious, letting the reference lieu-dit emerge with transparency.
On tasting, Les Mottelettes 2018 appears wide and deep, with a very fine perlage that precedes a full and creamy mouth, where the solar maturity of the vintage dialogues with a chalky tension of great clarity. On the palate emerges a muscular and well-drawn structure, crossed by notes of ripe pear, candied citrus, toasted almond, acacia honey and a briochée trail enriched with vanilla accents, sustained by a well-modulated acidity that brings drive and energy. The finish is long, vibrant and saline, with a chalky and flavoursome persistence that confirms the rare class of the Grand Cru.
