The Champagne Verzenay 2018 "Vieilles Vignes" by Pierre Paillard is a Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs born from the North-facing slope of the Montagne de Reims, a cool and noble exposure for Pinot Noir, where the deep limestone delivers a chiselled aromatic profile of rare energy. Here the Paillard brothers interpret two historic lieux-dits of the village, Les Corettes at the foot of the iconic windmill and Les Champs Saint-Martin, where the vines planted in 1967 and 1979 express a taut and luminous version of the grape, far from the opulence of Bouzy and rich in vertical drive.

This edition, Vintage 2018, involves vinification and fermentation entirely in fût de chêne, with liège tirage for the prise de mousse and particular attention to the purity of the fruit. After tirage follows an ageing on the lees of about four years, before dégorgement. With no final dosage, in Brut Nature style, a choice that lets the fresh and chalky tone of the two reference lieux-dits emerge with absolute transparency.

On tasting, Verzenay 2018 appears chiselled and dynamic, with a very fine perlage that precedes a taut and vibrant mouth, where the finesse of the North-facing Pinot Noir expresses itself with crystalline purity. On the palate emerges a sharp and well-drawn structure, crossed by notes of kirsch, violet, pink grapefruit and hints of small blue fruits, sustained by a clear-cut acidity that brings drive and energy. The finish is long, vibrant and saline, with a fresh and flowery persistence that confirms the rare class of the Grand Cru.

The story of Champagne Pierre Paillard begins in Bouzy, a village in the Montagne de Reims, where the family settled at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1768, ancestor Antoine Paillard acquired the first plots of vines, giving rise to a winemaking tradition passed down through the generations. Since 1946, the wines have been marketed under the family name, while today brothers Antoine and Quentin Paillard, the eighth generation, lead the Domaine with a shared vision, taking up the baton from their father Benoît and carrying forward a legacy spanning more than two centuries.

The beating heart of the Domaine lies in Bouzy itself, one of the seventeen villages classified as Grands Crus, renowned for its south-facing slopes on the Montagne de Reims. The deep chalk and clay subsoils give rise to wines of intense yet elegant character. In the cellar, vinification is parcel-by-parcel and meticulous, carried out in oak barrels with natural fermentations and long ageing on the lees — a faithful expression of an identity that combines respect for tradition with the pursuit of utmost purity.

The Domaine extends over around eleven hectares divided into some thirty parcels, planted mainly with Pinot Noir and complemented by Chardonnay, with vines averaging about thirty years of age and a few historic plots dating back to the 1930s. Beyond Bouzy, the family also tends vines in the Grands Crus of Ambonnay, Verzy and Verzenay, and in the Premiers Crus of Ludes and Taissy. Farming has been certified organic since 2020, with soil-friendly practices and precision viticulture, producing Champagnes that sincerely reflect their terroir and the genuine elegance of a family tradition spanning more than two centuries.
