Les Montants 2022
The Champagne Les Montants by Adrien Renoir is a Blanc de Blancs that gives voice to one of the most precious lieux-dits of the Verzy Grand Cru, in the Montagne de Reims, where old Chardonnay vines from selection massale, planted in 1961 with an eastern exposure, grow on a thin layer of topsoil that soon gives way to pure chalk. It is this subsoil that lends the wine energy, mineral depth and a crystalline transparency, able to convey the unique character of the plot with precision.
This edition, Vintage 2022, involves vinification and fermentation in oak barrels through spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, following an approach that respects the raw material and excludes fining and filtration. After tirage comes ageing on the lees of at least 36 months, which broadens complexity and structure, while the final dosage, below 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, preserves the saline tension and identity of Verzy Chardonnay.
On tasting, Les Montants 2022 opens with a bright and expressive bouquet in which pear, white peach and citrus intertwine with white flowers, hints of pastry and a chalky touch that recalls its terroir of origin. On the palate it is taut and creamy at the same time, with a fine bead and a vibrant acidity supporting a material of lovely density, leading to a long, savoury and precise finish where a delicate almond note seals a balance of great persistence.
