Le Fond du Bateau N°16 2016
The Champagne Le Fond du Bateau by Pertois-Lebrun is a Blanc de Blancs sourced from a single parcel located in the Lieu-Dit Le Fond du Bateau, in the Grand Cru village of Chouilly, at the heart of the Côte des Blancs. This old Chardonnay vineyard, planted in 1955 by the founder Paul Pertois and now more than 60 years old, represents one of the historic plots of the estate. The cuvée was created to highlight the identity of this chalky terroir, resulting in an extremely limited production capable of expressing elegance, depth, and mineral tension with remarkable precision.
This N°16 edition, Millésime 2016, undergoes vinification and fermentation partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in fût de chêne, a choice that combines expressive precision with aromatic complexity. After bottling, the wine benefits from an extended aging on the lees of at least 8 years, enhancing both structure and depth. The final dosage of 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, highlights the Champagne’s pure, taut, and mineral character.
On tasting, Le Fond du Bateau N°16 shows a pale gold color with satin reflections and a very fine, persistent perlage. The nose reveals aromas of ripe citrus, exotic fruit, and subtle vanilla and toasted notes, followed by a distinctive hint of licorice that echoes the chalky nature of the terroir. On the palate, the attack is fresh and expressive, with a full and structured body; a pronounced mineral texture carries the wine through to a long, precise, and distinctly chalk-driven finish. Limited production of only 1,530 bottles.
