Champagne Jean Josselin
Cuvée des Jean V23
The Champagne Cuvée des Jean by Jean Josselin carries the name of a dynasty, that of the Jeans who since 1957 have passed on the vineyards of Gyé-sur-Seine, in the southern Côte des Bar, along a family line running from Jean-Pierre to Jean-Félix and to little Jean, born in 2012. It is a Blanc de Noirs that tells the soul of this corner of the Barséquanais, where clay-limestone soils and a subsoil of Kimmeridgian marl give Pinot Noir that saline, iodine-tinged quality which is its most recognisable signature.
This edition, from the 2023 harvest completed by 22% of réserve perpétuelle, takes shape through a parcel-by-parcel vinification in stainless steel followed by malolactic fermentation, with no fining or filtration and with a reading that leaves the definition of the fruit untouched. After tirage comes an ageing on the lees of at least 24 months, while the final dosage of 1.5 g/l, in Extra Brut style, sets its measure without covering its natural generosity.
On tasting, Cuvée des Jean shows a bright golden yellow and a broad, generous nose, where hawthorn opens the way to ripe apple and to a hint of strawberry compote that underlines its sunny and direct temperament. On the palate it reveals great liveliness and a pleasant vinosity, supported by a fruity freshness that lengthens its stride and carries a soft finish shaded with white peach, precise and enveloping in its persistence and inviting a return.
