Champagne Elise Dechannes
Absolute Gres
The Champagne Absolue Grès by Elise Dechannes hides an ironic smile in its name, a gentle reply to those who looked sceptically at the vigneronne’s choices in the vineyard, and at the same time a cuvée that represents a fixed point for her, a way of rooting herself even more deeply in her land. We are in Les Riceys, the southernmost village of the Côte des Bar, where the grapes of a single parcel grow on Kimmeridgian soils of limestone and marl rich in marine fossils, tended with careful and respectful work that lets the terroir express itself naturally.
This edition, from the 2021 harvest, comes from a cool and challenging Vintage marked by low yields that delivered grapes of great tension and definition, made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes picked from a single parcel to create a Blanc de Noirs of character. Vinification and maturation take place in stoneware jars, a neutral and porous material that encourages slow micro-oxygenation without imparting aromas, preserving the purity of the fruit and the mineral imprint of the soil. After the tirage comes a period of ageing on the lees of around 36 months, which adds finesse and complexity to the aromatic profile, while at the time of dégorgement it takes its final shape without dosage, in the Brut Nature style, a choice that preserves its integrity and tension.
On tasting, Absolue Grès 2021 shows a pale gold colour with luminous highlights and a fine, precise perlage, which accompanies a clean and lifted nose where notes of small red berries, redcurrant and crisp apple intertwine with hints of citrus, white flowers, wet stone and a chalky background of limestone origin. On the palate the entry is taut and vertical, supported by incisive freshness and a slender, well-defined structure that finds balance in the juiciness of the fruit, while the absence of dosage enhances a clear salinity that carries the wine through to a long, mineral and beautifully persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 1,712 bottles.
