Champagne Henriot
L'inattendue 2018
The Champagne L’Inattendue by Henriot was born from the vision of the family’s eighth generation, represented by Gilles de Larouzière Henriot, and interprets one of the Maison’s most important principles: enhancing the diversity of Champagne’s terroirs through precise, essential and deeply distinctive expressions. This cuvée reveals the most crystalline expression of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, sourced from the Grand Cru of Avize, a terroir renowned for its chalky matrix, aromatic finesse and natural mineral tension.
This edition, Millésime 2018, is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, all Grand Cru, and tells the story of an extraordinary vintage. A mild, rainy winter was followed by a warm, stormy spring and then an arid, scorching summer, with a heat peak even higher than in 2003, while the water reserve held in the chalk limited stress on the vines and yielded healthy, generous grapes that ripened surprisingly quickly. Vinified in stainless-steel tanks, with full malolactic fermentation, the wine ages on the lees for more than four years before dégorgement, and a low final dosage of 2 g/l enhances its purity and freshness.
In tasting, L’Inattendue 2018 reveals a generous, exotic and gourmet profile, particularly expressive and true to the well-known character of the Chouilly cru. The nose is powerful and elegant, opening on fresh yellow fruit and pineapple, with notes of vanilla and a hint of petrol. On the palate the attack is ample and round, with a velvety texture and an extraordinary freshness, unique for 2018, that carries the wine towards great length. In the words of Cellar Master Alice Tétienne, it is the perfect reflection of the geological profile of its Grand Cru.
