Rosé Les Vandoyants N°20

The Champagne Rosé Les Vandoyants by Georges Rémy takes its name from the plot that defines its character, just over 0.40 ha of clay and limestone facing south to south east from Bouzy, the Grand Cru village of the Montagne de Reims where the family has been growing vines since 1629. The vines date back to 1975 and come from massal selection, a living heritage the vigneron protects through organic farming with biodynamic practices, convinced that a rosé from Bouzy should not be built as an exercise in colour but as a faithful expression of the terroir that shapes it.

This N°20 edition, from the 2020 harvest, is made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes joined by a small share of vin rouge de Bouzy, responsible for that pale, faintly coppery hue. Vinification and fermentation proceed spontaneously with indigenous yeasts alone in 500 litre barrels, followed by maturation in second, third and fourth fill fût de chêne. After tirage comes a minimum of twenty four months on the lees, while the decision to carry out dégorgement with no final dosage allows fruit and terroir to define the profile.

On tasting, Rosé Les Vandoyants N°20 shows a pale pink shade run through with coppery reflections and a bouquet that opens on wild strawberry, redcurrant and blood orange zest, with a base of sweet spice and bread crust revealing its long time on the lees. On the palate the attack is vibrant and saline, carried by an exceptionally fine bead that accompanies a body far broader than the colour would suggest. Balance comes from the tension between acidity and crisp red fruit, the structure stays vertical and marked by a chalky thread, and the finish stretches out on citrus returns of great clarity. Production in a limited run of 1,097 bottles.
