Chardonnay MillĂšsime 2020
The Champagne Chardonnay by Elise Dechannes is a rarity in Les Riceys, a village in the CĂŽte des Bar where Pinot Noir reigns supreme and Chardonnay occupies only a small share of the vigneronneâs vineyards. This very uniqueness makes it a precious wine, a Blanc de Blancs from a single parcel grown on Kimmeridgian soils of limestone and marl rich in marine fossils, within a Vivant certified philosophy that places the life of the soil, manual work and a sincere, intuitive reading of terroir at its centre.
This edition, Vintage 2020, comes from a warm and early year that yielded healthy, ripe and well-balanced grapes, made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes picked from a single parcel. Vinification and maturation take place in oak barrels for ten months, a step that brings breadth and structure without altering the finesse of the fruit. After the tirage comes a long period of ageing on the lees of almost five years, which adds depth and complexity to the aromatic profile, while at the time of dégorgement it is completed without final dosage, in the Brut Nature style, a choice that preserves its purity and mineral tension.
On tasting, Chardonnay 2020 shows a pale straw yellow colour and a fine, continuous perlage, which accompanies a fresh and elegant nose where notes of citrus, green apple and white flowers intertwine with hints of pear, almond, fresh butter and a delicate touch of brioche, over a chalky background of limestone origin. On the palate the entry is frank and precise, supported by vibrant freshness and a harmonious structure that finds balance in the ripeness of the fruit and the roundness brought by the oak, while the absence of dosage enhances a clear salinity that carries the wine through to a long, mineral and beautifully persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 1,557 bottles.
