Blanc "La Mule" 2022
The Coteaux Champenois La Mule by Aurore & Florian Laval comes to life in Boursault, on the Rive Gauche of the Vallée de la Marne, where a north-facing plot, with brown calcareous soils rich in silt and yields held to fifteen hectolitres per hectare, gives Chardonnay a firm and rigorous reading. The name, tied to the old mill that marks the site, speaks of a patient, craft-minded viticulture made of radical choices and of a constant search for the purity of the champenois terroir.
This edition, from the 2022 harvest, involves picking followed by full destemming, with a thirteen-day skin maceration that draws from the Chardonnay grapes the whole aromatic complexity of the fruit, and with vinification and fermentation carried out in steel to preserve clarity and definition. There follows twenty-four months of maturation in barrique previously used for red wines, a wood now discreet that adds depth and accompanies a refined aromatic evolution.
On tasting, La Mule 2022 shows a golden yellow dress crossed by amber reflections, opening onto an intense, well-defined nose in which chamomile and verbena weave into ripe peach and apricot and subtle nuances of white flowers. On the palate the texture is silky and well stretched, supported by a balanced freshness and an elegant minerality that melts slowly into a saline, gentle finish of rare elegance and long persistence.
