The Champagne Feu by Augustin is a Blanc de Noirs made exclusively from 100% Pinot Noir sourced from old vines in a single vineyard in Avenay Val d’Or, in the Vallée de la Marne. Marc Augustin’s vision is rooted in biodynamic viticulture, free from pesticides and conducted in harmony with the lunar cycles, where the element of fire becomes a symbol of transformation, intensity, and unpredictability. From this symbolic and agricultural approach emerges a cuvée conceived to express energy, warmth, and dynamism, offering a luminous interpretation of Pinot Noir.

This edition, based on the 2018 harvest, follows the same biodynamic principles in the cellar. Alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous, carried out with indigenous yeasts and without filtration, and takes place in different vessels: approximately 50% in wooden barrels, 20% in terracotta amphorae, and 30% in stainless steel, a choice that builds complexity without weighing down the wine’s profile. After tirage, the wine undergoes a long bottle ageing of around 60 months. No dosage is added, in keeping with a Brut Nature style of great precision.

On tasting, Feu 2018 reveals itself as a Blanc de Noirs of character and energy, with an aromatic profile marked by vanilla and pastry notes, well integrated with the varietal expression. On the palate, a vibrant freshness emerges, supported by citrus notes, tension, and drive, leading to a harmonious progression and a persistent finish that balances intensity and lightness.

Augustin

The story of Champagne Augustin begins with the meeting of two families of vignerons, four generations on Marc’s side and five on that of his wife Emmanuelle. Its roots reach back to the 20th century, when his great-grandmother Andrée Lefevre began producing her own Champagne, while in the 1970s and 1980s his father Jean Augustin made a pioneering turn, giving up herbicides and chemicals. Today Marc carries forward this bold, unconventional legacy, guardian of precious vines and of a rich, pure land.

In Avenay-Val-d’Or, a Premier Cru of the Vallée de la Marne, the Domaine stands in an exclusive landscape of vineyards and woods, the very setting that inspired Emmanuelle in shaping its spirit and image, with names, colours and materials in perfect harmony with the family’s values. In the cellar, following Demeter principles, every gesture aims at purity, with indigenous yeasts, no malolactic fermentation and no chaptalisation, chilling or filtration, using enamelled tanks, wooden barrels from the Montagne de Reims and terracotta amphorae.

The vineyard, around nine and a half hectares across Avenay-Val-d’Or and Vertus, a Premier Cru of the Côte des Blancs, is planted mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and farmed biodynamically with Demeter certification, in the belief that the world is a whole and every action brings a reaction. Marc calls it cardioviticulture, a careful listening to nature that guides each harvest parcel by parcel, according to ripeness and the lunar calendar. The result is pure, vibrant Champagnes, well worth seeking out and discovering to know the most authentic face of Avenay.
