The Champagne Terre by Augustin is a Blanc de Noirs that gives voice to the deepest and most grounded element of the range, made from Pinot Noir grapes from the young vines of a single vineyard in Avenay-Val-d’Or, a Premier Cru village overlooking the Vallée de la Marne. Here the Domaine practises pesticide-free biodynamic viticulture guided by the lunar rhythms, where earth takes on a symbolic value of stability, rootedness and primal energy and becomes the structural and mineral matrix of a cuvée that favours density, extract and a profound reading of the soil.

This edition, from the 2021 harvest, carries into the cellar the same biodynamic principles that guide the work in the vineyard. Vinification and fermentation take place spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts and without filtration, split across different vessels to preserve balance and complexity, with around 30% in wooden barrels, 30% in terracotta jars and 40% in stainless steel. After tirage the wine ages on its lees for around 48 months, while the absence of final dosage defines a taut, rigorous style aimed at the utmost expressive transparency.

On tasting, Terre 2021 proves deep and structured, opening onto notes of dark fruit, fine spices and earthy hints interwoven with a marked mineral imprint. On the palate it shows substance and energy, with a well-integrated savoury texture supported by a constant tension that shapes its structure with precision. The finish is long, dry and vibrant, delivering a well-judged balance between density and essentiality.

Augustin

The story of Champagne Augustin begins with the meeting of two families of vignerons, four generations on Marc’s side and five on that of his wife Emmanuelle. Its roots reach back to the 20th century, when his great-grandmother Andrée Lefevre began producing her own Champagne, while in the 1970s and 1980s his father Jean Augustin made a pioneering turn, giving up herbicides and chemicals. Today Marc carries forward this bold, unconventional legacy, guardian of precious vines and of a rich, pure land.

In Avenay-Val-d’Or, a Premier Cru of the Vallée de la Marne, the Domaine stands in an exclusive landscape of vineyards and woods, the very setting that inspired Emmanuelle in shaping its spirit and image, with names, colours and materials in perfect harmony with the family’s values. In the cellar, following Demeter principles, every gesture aims at purity, with indigenous yeasts, no malolactic fermentation and no chaptalisation, chilling or filtration, using enamelled tanks, wooden barrels from the Montagne de Reims and terracotta amphorae.

The vineyard, around nine and a half hectares across Avenay-Val-d’Or and Vertus, a Premier Cru of the Côte des Blancs, is planted mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and farmed biodynamically with Demeter certification, in the belief that the world is a whole and every action brings a reaction. Marc calls it cardioviticulture, a careful listening to nature that guides each harvest parcel by parcel, according to ripeness and the lunar calendar. The result is pure, vibrant Champagnes, well worth seeking out and discovering to know the most authentic face of Avenay.
