L'Astre
The Champagne L'Astre by David Léclapart is a Blanc de Noirs that reveals the brightest side of Pinot Noir from Trépail, a Premier Cru village of the Montagne de Reims best known for its Chardonnay and marked by chalky soils of great finesse. The result of biodynamic viticulture practised with conviction from the very beginning, it offers a rare and personal reading of the terroir, where purity, energy and respect for nature guide every choice in the vineyard and in the cellar.
This edition, from the 2022 harvest, comes from 40 to 50 year old vines grown mainly in the Le Champ Janvrai (lieu-dit) and La Fleuranne (lieu-dit) plots, in the southern part of Trépail. Vinification and fermentation take place in used oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, full malolactic conversion and no filtration. After tirage comes patient ageing on the lees for a minimum of 36 months, and the wine is released without final dosage, in Pas Dosé style, to preserve its authenticity.
On tasting, L'Astre shows a pale gold colour with a fine and persistent bead, opening with aromas of white peach, orange zest, bergamot and small red berries, accompanied by notes of toasted bread and brioche. On the palate it is broad and enveloping yet remarkably pure, supported by vibrant citrus freshness, saline tension and a chalky minerality reminiscent of oyster shell, leading to a long, savoury and deep finish that underlines its remarkable persistence.
