Feu Magnum

The Champagne Feu by Augustin is a Blanc de Noirs made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from old vines in a single vineyard in Avenay-Val-d’Or, in the Vallée de la Marne. Marc Augustin’s vision rests on biodynamic viticulture, free from pesticides and carried out in harmony with the lunar phases, where the element of fire becomes a symbol of transformation, intensity and unpredictability. From this symbolic and agricultural reading comes a cuvée designed to express energy, warmth and dynamism, in a luminous interpretation of Pinot Noir.

This edition in Magnum format, from the 2021 harvest, carries into the cellar the same biodynamic principles that guide the work in the vineyard. Vinification and fermentation take place spontaneously thanks to indigenous yeasts and without filtration, split across different vessels, with around 50% in wooden barrels, 20% in terracotta jars and 30% in stainless steel, a choice that adds complexity to the cuvée without weighing down its profile. After tirage the wine ages on its lees for around 36 months, and the cuvée is finished with no final dosage, ensuring great expressive precision.

On tasting, Feu 2021 shows a bright golden hue with a fine, continuous perlage, opening onto an aromatic profile of red fruit and ripe citrus, interwoven with notes of pastry, delicate spicy touches and a subtle earthy hint that reflects the contribution of wood and terracotta. On the palate it proves chiselled, light and almost airy, surprising with the finesse with which the old Pinot Noir vines convey energy without ever giving way to power, supported by vibrant freshness and a mineral tension that shapes its structure with great precision. The finish is long and persistent, true to the dynamic, transformative spirit of the element of fire that gives the cuvée its name.

Augustin

The story of Champagne Augustin begins with the meeting of two families of vignerons, four generations on Marc’s side and five on that of his wife Emmanuelle. Its roots reach back to the 20th century, when his great-grandmother Andrée Lefevre began producing her own Champagne, while in the 1970s and 1980s his father Jean Augustin made a pioneering turn, giving up herbicides and chemicals. Today Marc carries forward this bold, unconventional legacy, guardian of precious vines and of a rich, pure land.

In Avenay-Val-d’Or, a Premier Cru of the Vallée de la Marne, the Domaine stands in an exclusive landscape of vineyards and woods, the very setting that inspired Emmanuelle in shaping its spirit and image, with names, colours and materials in perfect harmony with the family’s values. In the cellar, following Demeter principles, every gesture aims at purity, with indigenous yeasts, no malolactic fermentation and no chaptalisation, chilling or filtration, using enamelled tanks, wooden barrels from the Montagne de Reims and terracotta amphorae.

The vineyard, around nine and a half hectares across Avenay-Val-d’Or and Vertus, a Premier Cru of the Côte des Blancs, is planted mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and farmed biodynamically with Demeter certification, in the belief that the world is a whole and every action brings a reaction. Marc calls it cardioviticulture, a careful listening to nature that guides each harvest parcel by parcel, according to ripeness and the lunar calendar. The result is pure, vibrant Champagnes, well worth seeking out and discovering to know the most authentic face of Avenay.
