The Coteaux Champenois Ambonnay Rouge La Sotabienne 2023 by R.H. Coutier is crafted from a careful selection of 100% Pinot Noir sourced from the eponymous Lieu-Dit, planted in 1965 near Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims. This historic vineyard, among the most representative of the Coutier family, produces wines of rare authenticity and elegance, a pure expression of the territory and its character.

The 2023 harvest was vinified and aged entirely in oak barrels (fût de chêne) for about 18 months, before being bottled in April 2025. This approach allows the wine to develop depth and aromatic complexity while maintaining freshness and structural finesse. Production is limited to just 600 bottles, making La Sotabienne an exclusive and precious expression of the Ambonnay terroir.

On the palate, La Sotabienne 2023 reveals a refined and vibrant profile, with aromas of ripe red fruits, spicy nuances, floral hints, and subtle woody tones. The mouthfeel shows a delicate tannic texture, elegant balance, and dynamic drive, sustained by a lively freshness that enhances the wine’s territorial depth and the artisanal refinement characteristic of the finest Coteaux Champenois from Ambonnay.

The Domaine R.H. Coutier, founded in 1809, is a historic family estate in Ambonnay, a prestigious Grand Cru of the Montagne de Reims. The family has been rooted in the village since 1619, and for over five generations they have crafted Champagnes that embody the dual soul of the terroir: the structural richness of Pinot Noir and the vibrant purity of Chardonnay, introduced here in a pioneering move in 1946.

Today, the vineyard covers 9.3 hectares divided into about 40 parcels, with an average vine age of 38 years. Most of the land is planted to Pinot Noir (70%), complemented by Chardonnay (30%), which in this terroir achieves a distinctive mineral elegance. The chalky-limestone soils with clay components and southeast-facing slopes provide wines of remarkable structure, depth, and freshness, a true expression of Ambonnay’s identity.

The Domaine is now led by Nathalie and her son Antoine, heirs of René Coutier. Their winemaking philosophy follows the principle of “as little as possible,” with minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar to preserve the essence of the terroir. In conversion to organic farming since 2020, R.H. Coutier employs respectful vinification, careful use of malolactic fermentation, and extended lees aging, resulting in balanced, vinous, and complex Champagnes.
