The Champagne Campanien by Legrand-Latour is the manifesto of the "hyper terroir" project conceived by Thibaut, who chooses to tell the story of Champagne through geological layers rather than villages or grape varieties, starting from the vineyards of Œuilly, in the Vallée de la Marne. Its name recalls the Campanian, the age between 83 and 72 million years ago when the accumulation of coccoliths, marine microorganisms, formed the clay and chalk subsoil that defines its strong identity.

This edition, 2020 harvest, is a Blanc de Noirs made exclusively from organically farmed Meunier grapes, vinified and matured in oak for 11 months with no added sulphites, to keep the expression of the fruit intact. After tirage comes 42 months of ageing on the lees in cellars dug into the subsoil, alongside the fossils and in stable climatic conditions all year round, while dégorgement takes place with no final dosage, in a Brut Nature style.

On tasting, Campanien shows an intense and clear-cut profile, with crisp red fruit, ripe citrus and delicate spicy and toasty notes from the oak, supported by a sharp, bright chalky vein that brings energy and depth. On the palate it is taut, saline and well structured, with a fine mousse and vibrant freshness carrying its development towards a long, mineral and precise finish, true to its subsoil. Production in a limited run of 2,400 bottles.
