Mont Martin 2020
The Champagne Mont Martin by Nicolas Maillart gives voice to an often underrated grape variety and raises it to the leading role, drawing on a historic parcel from Villers-Allerand, a Premier Cru village of the Montagne de Reims. The vines, planted in 1972 through massal selection, grow on Thanetian soils rich in marl and limestone, which give the wine depth and a marked saline vein. Respect for the natural rhythms of the vines and careful soil work, carried out with organic and biodynamic treatments and only when necessary with more traditional approaches, make this Blanc de Noirs from Meunier one of the rarest and most fascinating expressions of the Domaine.
This edition, Vintage 2020, entrusts vinification and maturation entirely to oak, which brings breadth, complexity and a texture of great finesse without sacrificing the freshness and original character of Meunier. After tirage follows ageing on the lees for 36 months, while the final dosage of 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, discreetly supports the natural tension of the wine and lets the full expressive clarity of the terroir emerge.
In tasting, Mont Martin 2020 shows a golden hue and a fine, creamy perlage, leading to a nose of ripe yellow fruit, candied citrus and hints of toasted hazelnut and pastry linked to the oak maturation. On the palate it is broad and enveloping yet always taut, with lively acidity that supports the structure and leads to a long, savoury finish, where the fruity side of Meunier and the mineral depth reach a complete balance and remarkable persistence.
