The Champagne Les Ronsures 2020 by Nicolas Maillart is a Blanc de Blancs crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in the eponymous Lieu-Dit, located near the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. Traditionally renowned for its outstanding Pinot Noir, Bouzy here reveals a different side, where the white grape variety shines with finesse and vertical elegance. The choice of such an unconventional plot reflects the vigneron's desire to highlight purity and identity, focusing on optimal ripeness and full respect for the vine's natural cycles.

The 2020 harvest is vinified entirely in oak barrels (fûts de chêne), aged on fine lees without any fining or filtration. This artisanal approach preserves both the fruit’s complexity and the mineral tension characteristic of the terroir. After bottling, the wine undergoes at least 36 months of lees ageing, before being disgorged with no dosage (0 g/l)—a hallmark of the Domaine’s pure and precise Extra Brut style.

On the palate, Les Ronsures 2020 impresses with its aromatic clarity and sharp structure: notes of citrus, fresh almond, and chalk unfold, layered with delicate toasty nuances. The mouthfeel is tense, saline, and deep, leading to a precise, persistent finish that hints at a remarkable ageing potential.

The Maillart family has been connected to viticulture since 1753, with documented roots dating back to 1553, when Pierre Maillart worked at the Abbey of Saint-Nicaise in Chamery. Today, Nicolas Maillart represents the ninth generation, continuing a clear vision: to faithfully express the potential of the terroirs of the Montagne de Reims, across Premier and Grand Cru villages. The vineyards, located mid-slope and composed of mature vines, are predominantly planted with Pinot Noir (around 75%), complemented by Chardonnay to bring balance, tension, and finesse.

Since 2009, the Domaine has strengthened its environmental commitment through concrete actions, including the installation of photovoltaic panels covering around 90% of its energy needs. This is supported by HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification and other recognitions for sustainable viticulture, reflecting a responsible and forward-thinking approach to vineyard management. The goal is to preserve soil balance while ensuring long-term quality and consistency.

In the cellar, the work focuses on respecting the character of the grapes through parcel-by-parcel vinification and a measured use of oak, also applied to the vin de réserve to enhance complexity and depth. A standout feature is a rare own-rooted (pied franc) parcel on sandy soils, planted with ungrafted Pinot Noir: replanted in 1973 using massal selection, it still produces high-quality fruit today. From this vineyard comes a unique Champagne, produced only in the finest vintages, offering a pure expression of the Domaine’s identity and its commitment to terroir-driven wines.
