Clos d'Ambonnay 2006
The Champagne Clos d'Ambonnay by Krug captures the intensity of a singular place, a walled plot of just 0.68 hectares in the heart of Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village among the most celebrated of the Montagne de Reims for its Pinot Noir. From this precious Clos, enclosed by eighteenth-century walls and devoted to a single variety, emerges a rare wine that conveys the pursuit of utmost purity and the faithful expression of a historic terroir, where each harvest reveals a character deeply tied to its origin.
This edition, Vintage 2006, expresses a single variety and a single year, the fruit of a hot and capricious season marked by twenty-three days above thirty degrees, alternations between drought and intense rainfall and a sunny finale that brought to ripeness healthy, splendidly concentrated grapes, harvested on 21 September. Vinification and maturation in fût de chêne precedes a long ageing of at least 14 years on the lees in the cellars of the Maison, capable of lending depth and complexity.
On tasting, Clos d'Ambonnay 2006 reveals a bright and luminous golden colour that introduces a profile of rare breadth and balance. The structure unfolds enveloping and precise, with an airy, round expression supported by a crystalline texture and an elegance that runs through the entire sip. The persistence is long and finely chiselled, marked by a fine gastronomic bitterness and a mineral tension that prolongs the finish, confirming the depth and coherence of a wine conceived to last over time. The sixth edition born from this Clos after the 1995 debut, it is presented in individually numbered bottles, for a total of 4,514 examples and 800 Magnums.
