Savigny Millésime 2019

The Champagne Savigny by Grethen is the result of 100% Meunier, grapes harvested from the lieu-dit “Les Vignes de la Vallée” located near the village of Savigny-sur-Ardres, in the Vallée de l’Ardre.

This edition, Millésime 2019, interprets the character of the site in a rigorous and terroir-driven way, offering a Blanc de Noirs of great purity and intensity. Vinification and maturation take place for 36 months in fût de chêne, followed by a further 36 months on the lees after tirage. The winemaking approach is minimal: reduced sulphites (30 mg/l), no fining, no filtration, and no final dosage – Brut Nature (0 g/l) – to preserve the Meunier’s clarity, tension, and identity.

In tasting, Savigny Millésime 2019 presents itself as deep, vibrant, and precise. On the nose it opens with notes of ripe pear, quince, fleshy yellow fruits, hints of white flowers, spicy nuances, and a slight smoky note resulting from the long period in wood. On the palate it is both taut and enveloping, with dense material balanced by an incisive mineral tension that runs through the entire tasting. The texture is precise, the progression vertical, the persistence long and layered, with fruity echoes and a dry, elegant, and defined finish, perfectly consistent with the style of the Domaine.

Grethen

Champagne Grethen was born in 1995 with Laurent and Annick Grethen, winemakers from Brouillet in the heart of the Vallée de l'Ardre, who, after having dedicated themselves to working in a cooperative for more than twenty years and having acquired new land, have made it possible the development of family brand. Since 2016, his son Antoine has assumed a fundamental role within the company, internalizing the winemaking process and converting all the processes of vineyard work to organic and biodynamic methods. In 2020, the 3 hectares of vineyards were certified in Organic Agriculture and Demeter.

The vines are grown for 80% Meunier, 10% Pinot Noir, 5% Chardonnay and 5% Petit Meslier on clayey-limestone soils. The vinification process is done in barriques with long maturation and spontaneous fermentation to reveal all the character of Meunier grape, the interventions in the cellar are minimal, as well as the contribution of sulphites: in 2020 the first cuvées were produced without added sulphites, and Antoine's goal is to continue on this path.
