Champagne Egly-Ouriet
Les Crayères V18
The Champagne Les Crayères by Egly-Ouriet is a Blanc de Noirs of extraordinary depth and expressive rigour, made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes from a single historic parcel in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. This lieu-dit, planted in 1946, rests on a truly unique soil, a layer of earth barely 30 centimetres deep lying directly on a bed of chalk that reaches down for tens of metres. The old vines, deeply rooted in the chalk, give full voice to the character of the terroir, lending the wine concentration, ripeness and intense notes of red fruit, together with a distinctly “crayeuse” minerality that brings elegance and remarkable ageing potential.
This edition, based on the 2018 harvest, expresses all the balance and tension that defined the vintage. Vinification and fermentation take place entirely in barrique, without fining or filtration and without malolactic fermentation, a choice that preserves the wine’s natural freshness and the identity of its terroir. After tirage, the wine ages on the lees for more than 74 months before dégorgement. The final dosage of 1 g/l, in Extra Brut style, underlines the stylistic purity and decisive character of the cuvée.
On tasting, Les Crayères shows a brilliant golden yellow colour with amber highlights, opening onto a rich, multifaceted nose where ripe red fruit mingles with hazelnut, yellow flowers, candied citrus and a clear chalky mineral imprint. On the palate it is vigorous, structured and deep, carried by a fine, creamy mousse that accompanies a taut and saline progression, perfectly balanced between generous fruit and vertical minerality. The long, precise finish brings successive returns of fruit, toast and chalk, closing with remarkable persistence that confirms the great ageing potential of this Blanc de Noirs.
