L'Aprôte
The Champagne L'Apôtre by David Léclapart is the vigneron's most intimate and ambitious cuvée, a Blanc de Blancs that gives voice to the old vines of Trépail, a Premier Cru village on the eastern slopes of the Montagne de Reims. From rows set at the edge of the woods, where the freshness of the forest and clay-limestone soils rich in flint shape a Chardonnay of rare depth, this wine tells with almost spiritual devotion the story of a lifelong biodynamic journey.
This edition, from the 2020 harvest, comes entirely from the La Pierre Saint-Martin (lieu-dit) plot, with vines planted in 1946, and involves vinification and fermentation entirely in used oak barrels with indigenous yeasts, full malolactic conversion and no fining or filtration. After tirage comes long ageing on the lees for over 48 months, and the choice to release it without final dosage allows the full concentration of these old vines to shine through.
On tasting, L'Apôtre shows an intense golden hue with luminous green reflections and a very fine bead, opening with aromas of yellow-fleshed fruit, citrus zest, brioche and toasted almond, enhanced by spicy hints and a touch of flint. On the palate it combines generous, enveloping flesh with precise and lifted acidity, with a deep structure and pronounced minerality leading to a long, complex finish of extraordinary persistence.
