Blanc "Les Hauts Bouitais" 2023

The Coteaux Champenois “Les Hauts Bouitais” by Carré Frères is a still white wine from an old Chardonnay plot in Trépail, a Premier Cru village on the eastern slope of the Montagne de Reims, where this grape covers much of the vineyard area in a zone best known for Pinot Noir. The vines, planted in 1962, grow on chalky soils that give the wine tension and salinity, and the choice not to turn it into Champagne lets the terroir show without the effect of the second fermentation.

This edition, from the 2023 harvest, comes from a generous year, with an abundant crop and healthy bunches brought to full ripeness, and is made solely from Chardonnay grapes with a low-intervention approach in the cellar. Vinification and maturation follow for 21 months in 228-litre oak barrels, a long élevage for a still wine that brings breadth and a richer texture without masking the fruit or the freshness.

On tasting, “Les Hauts Bouitais” 2023 opens on a nose of ripe lemon, apple and pear, enriched by delicate white flowers, a touch of fresh almond and a clear mineral nuance. On the palate it is taut and straight, with good energy and enough body to carry the oak without feeling heavy, while the acidity keeps the wine lifted through to a finish of citrus, wet stone and light salinity, with precise balance and long, clean persistence. Production in a limited run of 1,905 bottles and 67 magnums.

Carré Frères

Domaine Carré Frères was born in 1997 even if its origins are much older, boasting a long family tradition of vigneron dating back to at least 1894. The 21-hectare property is divided into several parcels "vieilles vignes" in the surroundings of Trépail, Villers- Marmery and Verzy, in the Montagne de Reims, and around Essoyes and Les Riceys, in the Côte des Bar. The parcels are organically managed and vinified with the help of indigenous yeasts only, using mostly demi-muids barrels.

Carré Champagnes, in which Chardonnay is the main protagonist, stand out for their exceptional freshness, minerality, vivacity and extraordinary drinkability. Domaine Carré Frères is a booming reality and Eduard Carrè, the talented Vigneron who leads the property, is stealing the champenoise scene, alongside figures such as Antoine Bouvet, Tom Gauditiabois, Paul Gosset, Florian Mignon…
