Champagne Billecart-Salmon
Clos Saint-Hilaire 2006
The Champagne Clos Saint-Hilaire by Billecart-Salmon represents one of the rarest and most prestigious cuvées of the historic house based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, founded in 1818 by Nicolas-François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon and still managed by the family into its seventh generation. This label embodies the most distinctive expression of the estate’s vineyard heritage: it comes from a one-hectare clos planted with Pinot Noir, located next to the family’s historic residence, with vines originally planted in 1964. The wine takes its name from Saint-Hilaire, patron saint of the church of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and represents an extremely limited production that conveys with remarkable precision the character and purity of the terroir of this small walled vineyard.
This Millésime 2006 edition, marked by warm climatic conditions and particularly complete grape ripening, has produced a rich and profound Champagne with significant ageing potential. Vinification and maturation in oak barrels enhance structure and aromatic complexity, a distinctive stylistic choice that sets this cuvée apart from most Champagnes, which are generally vinified in stainless steel.
On tasting, Clos Saint-Hilaire 2006 reveals an intense golden colour and a complex bouquet evoking ripe yellow fruit, honey, sweet spices and hints of red fruit. On the palate it stands out for its breadth and depth, supported by precise freshness that balances the generosity of the vintage. The texture is creamy, with a very fine mousse and a broad, layered structure evolving toward mineral and spicy notes in the long and persistent finish. International critics have awarded it very high scores, confirming its status as a great Champagne with outstanding ageing potential. Production is extremely limited, making Clos Saint-Hilaire one of the rarest cuvées in Champagne, with only 6,750 numbered bottles released.
