Champagne Henri Giraud
Argonne 2018
The Champagne Argonne by Henri Giraud is the cuvée that most fully expresses the most authentic soul of the Maison, a tribute to the Grand Cru of Aÿ and to the ancient bond between Champagne and the Argonne forest, from which comes the oak that accompanies every stage of its development. The grapes come from two historic parcels, Les Valnons (lieu-dit) for Pinot Noir and Croix Courcelles (lieu-dit) for Chardonnay, and are interpreted through a constant dialogue between soil, grape variety and oak, in a vision that makes depth and precision the defining traits of this label.
This edition, Vintage 2018, comes from a sunny and generous year, with a hot, dry summer and an early harvest that began as early as 20 August, while cooler nights preserved good natural acidity alongside ripe and expressive fruit. The blend shows a clear predominance of Pinot Noir grapes at 90%, completed by 10% Chardonnay. Vinification and maturation take place entirely in new oak barrels from the Argonne forest, personally selected by Claude Giraud and made from staves seasoned for three to six years. After tirage, the wine ages on the lees for about 7 years, gaining complexity and aromatic breadth. The final dosage of 6 g/l, in Brut style, preserves tension and balance while fully respecting the character of the wine.
On tasting, Argonne 2018 shows a bright, intense golden colour and a rich, sunny nose recalling apricot, mirabelle plum and ripe yellow-fleshed fruit, enriched by hints of anise, liquorice and sweet spice delicately woven into the toasty notes of the oak. On the palate it reveals a full, rich and vinous structure, supported by concentrated fruit and juicy acidity that keeps it lively and dynamic. The finish is long and incisive, with returns of gentian and sweet spice that close in a harmonious balance between generosity and tension.
