Champagne Benoît Lahaye
Le Jardin de la Grosse Pierre 2021
The Champagne Le Jardin de La Grosse Pierre by Benoît Lahaye is a deeply identity-driven cuvée, conceived as a living testament to the viticultural history of Bouzy (Grand Cru). It is born from the assemblage of the seven grape varieties authorized in Champagne: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Meunier, and the Cépages Oubliés — Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau — all grown in a single lieu-dit planted in 1923 by Benoît’s great-grandfather. Old vines, massal selection, and the clay-limestone soils of the Montagne de Reims shape a wine that brings together memory, complexity, and a contemporary vision of terroir.
This Millésime 2021 edition follows an artisanal winemaking approach fully aligned with Lahaye’s philosophy, with fermentation and ageing in wooden barrels designed to respect the identity of both the grapes and the parcel. After bottling, the wine matures for approximately 36 months on the lees, developing articulation and depth without excess. The choice of a Brut Nature style (zero dosage) highlights the intent to offer a transparent, precise, and unmediated expression of the Bouzy terroir.
In tasting, Le Jardin de La Grosse Pierre 2021 reveals a complex and dynamic profile: the nose opens on notes of fresh citrus, white-fleshed fruit, wildflowers, and hints of herbal infusions, accompanied by chalky nuances and subtle smoky accents. On the palate it is taut and deep, with a well-integrated acid tension and a saline texture that guides the wine’s progression. The finish is long and measured, closing with a balanced, vibrant, and strongly terroir-driven expression.
