Le LĂ©on 2015
The Champagne Le LĂ©on by Philipponnat represents the most precise expression of the AĂż terroir, held within a single historic plot facing south in one of the noblest and most gifted areas of Champagne. Its vines, rooted on the Grand Cru slopes of AĂż where chalk and sun exposure reach an ideal balance, convey with absolute clarity the finesse, depth and character of a Pinot Noir of rare elegance, a true mirror of its native land.
This edition, Vintage 2015, comes from an exceptional year marked by a cool spring and one of the hottest and driest summers in decades, which imposed low yields and optimal concentration with ripeness well above the average. Using the first press alone, it follows a traditional vinification and fermentation carried out entirely in wood and without malolactic, so as to avoid any premature oxidation. After the tirage comes an ageing on the lees of at least seven years, while the final dosage of 4.25 g/l, in Extra Brut style, safeguards the balance between freshness and vinosity.
On tasting, Le LĂ©on 2015 shows a golden colour with light coppery reflections, while on the nose it opens expressive and intense on spicy notes reminiscent of gingerbread and honey, followed by mango and exotic fruit and, with aeration, by light smoky nuances of tobacco. On the palate it is fruity and generous, with hints of blackberry and guava and a touch of vanilla, before closing on a saline finish of fine length marked by delicate bitter notes and light touches of bergamot. Production in a limited run of 3,732 bottles.
