Champagne Philipponnat
Cuvée 1522 Millésime 2019
The Champagne 1522 by Philipponnat celebrates the origins of the House, born in 1522, and translates into a deep, complex wine its centuries-old bond with the terroir of AĂż. It all begins in the historic Le LĂ©on lieu-dit, a vineyard classified AĂż Grand Cru where the chalk and the privileged exposure give Pinot Noir a rare power and a natural finesse, in a story that weaves family memory together with the calling of one of the noblest villages in Champagne.
This edition, Vintage 2019, comes from an exceptional year with healthy grapes in perfect balance between acidity and sugar, and brings together 77% Pinot Noir grapes from AĂż, Mailly and Verzy with 23% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Vinification and fermentation include 20% in oak barrels and 43% of the wines without malolactic, so as to preserve their freshness and complexity. After the tirage comes an ageing of six years on the lees, which gives depth and breadth, while the final dosage of 4.25 g/l, in Extra Brut style, enhances its balance.
On tasting, 1522 Millèsime 2019 shows a bright pale gold lit by delicate golden reflections, while on the nose it opens elegantly on subtle iodised notes that, with aeration, give way to dark fruits of blackcurrant and wild blackberry and to gently smoky nuances. On the palate the attack is fresh and sustained by a fine mineral tension, with returns of berry fruits, eau-de-vie and spices reminiscent of Timut pepper, before closing on a smoky finish of long and persistent aromatic breadth.
