Champagne Philipponnat
Blanc de Noirs 2020
The Champagne Blanc de Noirs by Philipponnat tells the story of the Montagne de Reims through the eyes of a House that since 1522 has interpreted Pinot Noir as the mother tongue of its terroir. In the villages of Mailly, Ambonnay, Verzenay and Mareuil-sur-Ay, among sun-kissed chalky slopes and vineyards classified as Premier and Grand Cru, an approach takes shape that values exclusively the first pressing, capable of restoring with greater purity the chalky, sunlit soul of the region.
This edition, Vintage 2020, comes from one of the earliest and driest harvests ever recorded, with picking begun as early as 24 August and an ideal ripening that brought Pinot Noir grapes capable of full balance. Vinification and fermentation are carried out in a traditional way, partly in wood and steel and without malolactic to preserve momentum and freshness. After the tirage comes an ageing on the lees of at least five years, while the final dosage of 4.25 g/l, in Extra Brut style, safeguards the balance between saline tension and the variety's vinosity.
On tasting, Blanc de Noirs 2020 shows a pale golden hue crossed by a fine, continuous perlage, while on the nose it reveals an intense, fresh profile where dark fruits and blackcurrant gradually give way to spicy nuances of pepper, sandalwood and a delicate touch of vanilla. On the palate the attack is lively and taut, sustained by a vibrant freshness and by returns of exotic fruit of mango and lime, with an elegant structure and a long persistence closed by fine bitter notes of aniseed.
