The Champagne Essentiel by Erik Schreiber is an authentic expression of the Barséquanais terroir in the Côte des Bar, where the Kimmeridgian soil lends elegance and depth to the predominant Pinot Noir. This borderland between Champagne and Burgundy is where Schreiber develops an artisanal, sensitive vision, capable of enhancing the identity of his vineyards through respectful winemaking and an essential approach focused on balance between substance and mineral tension.

This edition comes from a blend of three vintages – 2021, 2020, and 2019 – composed of 52% Pinot Noir, 43% Chardonnay, and 5% Pinot Blanc, a rare and precious variety among the cépages oubliés of Champagne. Fermentation and ageing in fût de chêne provide structure and complexity, while at least 24 months of lees ageing after tirage contribute to the wine’s overall harmony. The final dosage of 3,3 g/l, in Brut style, highlights its expressive purity and strong sense of place.

In tasting, Essentiel stands out for its elegance and tension, with aromas of candied citrus, crisp pear, and delicate spicy nuances. On the palate, it combines breadth and verticality, with a creamy texture crossed by a persistent saline streak. The overall impression is deep and coherent, capable of uniting expressive energy with stylistic precision.

In the Côte des Bar, in Courteron, lies Domaine Erick Schreiber, a small estate of about six and a half hectares set within an area renowned for its organic vocation. It is led by Erick Schreiber, a winemaker-oenologist and pioneer of biodynamics since 1990, driven by the desire to preserve a sustainable ecosystem and to keep the vineyard in harmony with its natural environment. To him is owed the creation of biodynamic yeast strains now adopted by leading Maisons, the fruit of constant research and of a vision that places respect for nature at the heart of every choice.

The vineyards, certified organic and biodynamic according to the Demeter standard, are cultivated without any synthetic product, on a clay-limestone soil that lends structure and brightness to the wines. Pinot Noir largely dominates the plantings, accompanied by Chardonnay and a refined presence of Pinot Blanc, Meunier and Pinot Gris, for a total production of around twenty-five thousand bottles. The result is authentic Champagnes, fresh and mineral, of notable aromatic complexity, faithfully translating the terroir of origin and the deep bond between the land and those who tend it.
