Champagne C.H. Piconnet
Page Blanche 20... Magnum
The Champagne Page Blanche 20… by C.H. Piconnet carries in its name the idea of a page still waiting to be written, a story that renews itself with every harvest, beginning in the family vineyards of Neuville-sur-Seine in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost reach of Champagne in the Aube department. Here Agathe and Clément Piconnet interpret a landscape of Kimmeridgian marl and well-exposed hillsides with an essential philosophy, summed up on the label by the words «Nos racines, les vignes, l’assemblage de millésimes et rien d’autre», a statement of loyalty to their origins and to work free of artifice. The grapes come from eight plots (lieux-dits) Val Mentra la Côte, Grassot, Val Ligé, La Lampe, Val Mentra, Val Ligé le Haut, La Chappe and Val Cureux, a mosaic of exposures and soils that gives the wine depth and a strong territorial identity.
This edition, based on the 2021 harvest, brings together 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay grapes and is enriched by a generous share of vin de réserve from the 2020 harvest, amounting to 40%, which lends complexity and breadth to the assemblage. Vinification and fermentation take place exclusively in stainless steel, a choice designed to preserve the purity of the fruit and the natural tension of the grapes. After tirage the wine ages for 30 months on its lees and is released with no final dosage, in Brut Nature style, to express with transparency the character of the year and of the plots.
On tasting, Page Blanche 20… shows a bright straw-yellow hue with a fine, persistent perlage. The nose reveals notes of pear, yellow apple and citrus, joined by hints of small red berries, white flowers and a delicate touch of bread crust that recalls the long ageing on the lees. On the palate it is taut and vertical, with vibrant freshness well balanced by the structure of the Pinot Noir and a savoury, mineral texture that leads into a long, clean and remarkably persistent finish. Production in a limited run of 3,387 bottles and 48 magnums.
