Coteaux Champenois Bollinger
La Côte aux Enfants Rouge 2019
The Coteaux Champenois La Côte aux Enfants by Bollinger is a great red wine born from the mythical parcel of Aÿ, a steep 4-hectare vineyard at the edge of the Grand Cru village. Red wines were once what made this area famous, and the Pinot Noirs of Aÿ, favoured by Henri IV, ranked among the most sought-after at the French court. At the beginning of the 20th century, Jacques Bollinger patiently reconstituted this historic plot, then fragmented among more than fifty owners, of which the Maison is today the sole proprietor.
This edition, 2019 harvest, originates solely from Pinot Noir grapes from the La Côte aux Enfants lieu-dit, with one third of the grapes vinified as whole bunches. The winemaking follows a Burgundian style, with a slow, cold maceration preceding fermentation, followed by maturation in small oak barrels. Produced only in the most prestigious years, it represents a rare and exclusive expression of the Maison's savoir-faire, able to translate with precision the identity of an exceptional terroir.
On tasting, the Coteaux Champenois Rouge La Côte aux Enfants 2019 appears with a deep garnet robe and reveals itself broad and enveloping, sustained by silky tannins and an elegant, deep substance. The gustatory development weaves accents of violet, bergamot and black fruit preserve with more complex nuances of pepper, truffle and forest floor, in an ensemble of great intensity and finesse, leading to a long and vibrant persistence that confirms its extraordinary class.
