Champagne Bollinger
Special Cuvée Jéroboam
The Champagne Special Cuvée by Bollinger is the emblematic cuvée of the Maison, a symbol of density, elegance, and savoir-faire. Created in 1911 at the suggestion of Georges Bollinger’s British agent – who considered the expression “Brut sans année” too modest for a wine of such refinement – it has since carried an unmistakable English name: Special Cuvée. More than a century later, this name continues to evoke the essence of the Bollinger style: power and precision, tradition and modernity blended in perfect harmony. The cuvée is the result of a meticulous assemblage combining the expression of the latest harvest with a majority of reserve wines, some of which are aged in magnums for 7–15 years.
Over 85% of the grapes come from Grands and Premiers Crus villages located between the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, and Côte des Blancs – from terroirs such as Aÿ, Louvois, Verzenay, Avenay-Val-d’Or, Cuis, Champvoisy, and Tauxières. The structure is dominated by Pinot Noir (60%), supported by Chardonnay (25%) and Meunier (15%). After an aging on the lees for a period more than double that required by the appellation, the wine is disgorged with a dosage of 6–7 g/l, achieving a perfect balance between fullness and freshness.
In tasting, Special Cuvée reveals a deep golden color, a hallmark of Pinot Noir, with an exceedingly fine and persistent mousse. The nose offers complex aromas of ripe fruit, spices, baked apple, compote, and peach, enriched by elegant toasted nuances. On the palate, it shows a velvety texture, great depth and length, with flavors of pear, brioche, and dried fruit merging into a creamy, vibrant sip marked by remarkable balance and persistence. An iconic Brut that encapsulates the very soul of Bollinger: the consistency of its style, the richness of its substance, and the ability to express each year the same intensity and finesse that have made it, for over a century, truly “special.”
