Champagne R. Pouillon & Fils
Les Blanchiens 2019
The Champagne Les Blanchiens by Fabrice Pouillon reveals the brightest soul of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, a Premier Cru village from the Vallée de la Marne where a single parcel facing full south, mid-slope at around 170 metres of altitude, lies on clay soils resting on a chalk subsoil. In this lieu-dit the dialogue between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay finds an expression of rare harmony, supported by vines farmed according to biodynamic principles and by an artisanal vision that aims to convey the voice of the vineyard with the utmost transparency.
This edition, Vintage 2019, brings together Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes in equal parts, vinified separately to preserve the identity of each variety. Vinification and fermentation take place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels, with regular bâtonnage and full malolactic fermentation, followed by a long maturation in wood that gives the vin clair depth and complexity. After tirage, the wine rests on the lees for around five years before dégorgement, while the choice to release it without final dosage, in Brut Nature style, allows the fruit and terroir of the Domaine to express themselves directly and authentically.
On tasting, Les Blanchiens 2019 opens on the nose with candied citrus, bitter orange and lime zest, evolving towards hints of smoked black tea, toasted hazelnut and dried flowers, alongside a clear saline note. On the palate it is silky yet taut, with vibrant acidity and a chalky minerality that outline a precise structure, where Pinot Noir brings drive and depth while Chardonnay adds brightness and finesse, leading to a long, precise finish, gently spiced and of great persistence. Production in a limited, numbered run of 2,640 bottles.
