Blanc Mésange 2021
The Coteaux Champenois Blanc Mésange by Jean-Marie Massonnot reveals the most intimate and least-known side of Champagne, that of its still wines, able to express terroir without the mediation of bubbles. This captivating white is crafted solely from Chardonnay grapes grown in the Domaine’s own vineyards in Coulommes-la-Montagne, a Premier Cru village of the Montagne de Reims, and translates all the richness of this land into a luminous, deep expression.
This edition, 2021 harvest, comes from a cool and challenging year that called for great care in the vineyard and rigorous grape selection. Vinification and maturation take place in 400-litre fût de chêne, where the wine ages for at least 18 months, gaining complexity, breadth and a delicate oaky imprint that enhances its character. The result is a limited and exclusive production, offering a rare and authentic interpretation of Champagne Chardonnay vinified as a still wine.
On tasting, Blanc Mésange 2021 opens on the nose with bright, enveloping aromas of fresh straw, ripe wheat and cereals that evoke a summery profile full of warmth and vitality, while delicate oaky notes emerge through an elegant touch of vanilla enriched by aniseed and exotic nuances. On the palate it is equally enveloping, with complex, well-harmonised aromas and finely integrated tannins that enhance the wine’s decisive character, recalling the perfect ripeness of crisp, juicy berries. The finish is soft and silky, with elegant persistence marked by an intriguing return of candied pear and mirabelle plum that gently heralds the arrival of autumn.
