Rouge Gorge 2021
The Coteaux Champenois Rouge Gorge by Jean-Marie Massonnot takes its name from the robin, the little bird that loves wild berries, and captures its lively, joyful spirit in an elegant red wine that reveals the rarest side of Champagne, that of its still wines. The grapes come from the Domaine’s own vineyards in Coulommes-la-Montagne, a Premier Cru village of the Montagne de Reims, and the blend shows a prevalence of Meunier grapes at 60%, complemented by 40% Pinot Noir grapes, in a harmonious meeting of generous fruit, structure and depth.
This edition, from the 2021 harvest, comes from a cool and challenging year that called for great care in the vineyard and careful grape selection. Vinification and maturation include a one-week maceration in fût de chêne, which extracts colour, aromas and a fine, well-defined tannic texture. The wine then ages for at least 18 months, gaining complexity and balance, in a limited and confidential production that offers an authentic and original interpretation.
On tasting, Rouge Gorge 2021 opens on the nose with intense fruity aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, which over time are enriched by wilder, more sophisticated accents of leather, cade oil and sandalwood. On the palate the tannic texture is compact and well structured, supporting an intense spicy expression in which ripe fruit blends with pleasant power, delivering harmonious balance and a deep progression. The unexpected, intriguing finish unfolds with good persistence and closes on a note of bell pepper that gives the wine a unique and distinctive touch of character.
