Grand Millésime 2016

The Champagne Grand Millésime 2016 by Gosset is a faithful snapshot of the 2016 harvest, filtered through the unmistakable style of the Maison, the oldest in Champagne, founded in Aÿ in 1584. The blend consists of 61% Chardonnay and 39% Pinot Noir, sourced from a selection of prestigious villages including Ambonnay, Aÿ, Chamery, Cramant, Mailly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Passy, Pierry, Trépail, and Vertus. Bottled in June 2017, the wine was aged on the lees for a minimum of 6 years, followed by an additional six months in the cellar after disgorgement. A carefully measured dosage of 4 g/l preserves the balance between freshness, fruit, and vinosity.

On tasting, Grand Millésime 2016 shows a refined pale yellow hue, with a fine and persistent mousse. The nose is dominated by fresh notes of fennel and star anise, accompanied by a hint of mint. As the wine opens, more indulgent aromas of poached pears, almonds, and nougat emerge. The palate is elegant from the outset, with a core of fresh fruit such as mirabelle plums, rhubarb, and Reinette apples. The finish stands out for its sharp freshness and a subtle bitterness, typical of the Grands Crus, which lends great elegance and depth. This Champagne Millésime reflects the character of a vintage marked by slow yet optimal ripening, thanks to a summer that began cool and ended warm and sunny — ideal conditions for a fine vintage. Grand Millésime 2016 masterfully expresses Maison Gosset’s philosophy, offering a harmonious balance between terroir-driven character and expressive purity.

Gosset

Gosset is the oldest Maison in Champagne, founded in 1584 in Aÿ by Pierre Gosset, lord and Échevin of the village. The family's roots trace back to Jean Gosset (1484-1556), "Lord of Aÿ and Mareuil", the first documented ancestor of the dynasty. For sixteen generations of direct lineage, the Gosset family has safeguarded a savoir-faire passed down from father to son, until 1993, when the Maison joined the family-owned Renaud-Cointreau group, which has since devotedly preserved its original style and identity.

In 2009, on the occasion of its 425th anniversary, the Maison moved to Épernay into the splendid Hôtel Trouillard, an early twentieth-century building set within a protected park, beneath which stretch around five kilometres of galleries carved into the chalk, reaching depths of up to twenty metres. Here, a constant temperature and humidity of around eighty percent accompany the slow ageing of the bottles. Its iconic emblem remains the celebrated bouteille antique, introduced by Jean Gosset in 1760 and adorned with the refined medaillon en sautoir designed by Albert Gosset.

The vineyards span approximately 140 hectares across a refined mosaic of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus in the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne, with plots in the most prestigious villages such as Aÿ, Bouzy, Ambonnay, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Vertus and Cumières. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier give rise to an unmistakable style, defined by mineral freshness, vinosity and finesse, sustained by the Viticulture Durable en Champagne certification. Each bottle thus becomes the reflection of more than four centuries of timeless elegance, preserved in the most authentic spirit of Champagne.
